Summer 2013 surfboards

1978_retro_twin_lgeWe have loads of new boards in stock for summer 2013 - Channel Islands, Mark Richards, Hayden Shapes, Aloha, Tiki, 7S and Torq. Plenty of classic summer boards with extra width and volume that will fly in anything from waist high to well overhead waves, as well as high volume shortboards for intermediate level surfers looking for a step down board. If you have a board you want to trade in against one of these new boards call in to the shop for a chat. It helps if your old board is clean and undamaged. We also have some test drive options if you are not sure what you want.

tiki_nitrous_1For intermediate surfers looking for a step down board then check out the Tiki FB3 in 6’6, 6’10 and 7’2. Another good option in the same category is the Tiki Nitrous in 6’3, 6’8 and 7’2. The Tiki boards are solid performers with a level of forgiveness that you will appreciate in a step down board. The Torq boards run from 6’3 to 9’0 and they are also good step down boards that are the most solid, durable construction of any boards around, as well as being very well priced.

We have a few more styles of high volume shortboard that will appeal to experienced and intermediate surfers alike. The 7S Cog comes in 6’6 and 6’9 and has heaps of paddling power.  The Aloha Bean comes in 6’0, 6’3 and 6’6 and is getting close to a shortboard but still has extra volume and width.

7s_superfish_ll_bluedip_2012The 7S Superfish range run from 6’0 to 7’3 and epitomise the classic fish with a modern twist. Very popular.

Moving towards the top of the range we have the Hayden Shred Sled in 5’8, 5’10 and 6’0. These are super fun boards in future flex construction that fly in anything from waist high to overhead waves.

For anyone with a bit more to spend we have the Mark Richards 1978 retro twin in 6’0 and also a supertwin in 6’3.

weirdo-ripperAnd finally the Channel Islands boards. We have the Weirdo Ripper in 5’10 and the Fred Rubble in 6’0.

We also have some classic longboards in stock such as the Walden 9’2 Magic and the Mc Tavish F4 in 9’1

If you are unsure about what board to choose then call in to the shop and have a chat and we can advise.

Typical day at the Algarve surf trip

The day at the Algarve Surf School & Camp begin around 9 am with some chilled music to wake you up.  After you make your way downstairs, you will find a breakfast to revive you after the last night and prepare you for a day of surfing.

Fresh rolls from the bakery, cereals, fruit, coffee and tea for your breakfast, and ham, cheese, salad and sauces for you to make a sandwich for the beach. After breakfast, around 10am we will pack our stuff together, load the surf boards on the Jeep, and drive you down to the beach. Usually this will be Praia do Amado, but we have the independence to choose from plenty of other spots nearby if the conditions are better elsewhere.

After the morning lesson, it’s time to relax your muscles and minds from surfing. Chill out at the beach, take your lunch, or have a nap to regather your energy for the afternoon session. In the afternoon there will be another 1h30 surf lesson.

In the afternoon we will all meet up for dinner/BBQ etc and a bit of craic/banter. We will run at least 2 evenings of video anlysis during the trip.

Surf Report

Plenty of surf arround this weekend with a building swell all weekend and potential all time waves on monday.
On saturday the swell will start small but build throughout the day. Tullan will be the only spot early but real messy. Later on Rossnowalgh will have waves and there could be some decent waves on the reefs and streedagh just before dark in the 2 to 3 foot range.
On sunday the swell will continue to build and will be 4 to 5 foot at least by the afternoon. The south west winds will mean streedagh will be the cleanest beach breaks. The swell should be big enough to fill in at the reefs and anywere with protection from south winds will be worth alook.
on sunday the swell will still be in the 4 foot range but the winds light and offshore. Rossnowalgh and Streedagh will both be good if this forecast stays and the reefs should be firing.
Great weekend of surf to be had so enjoy

Hillwalking and surfing in Bundoran

Hillwalking in the Northwest of Ireland provides some of the most magical experiences that walking in Ireland can give you. You get to experience the Flora & Fauna, Bog lands, Geology, History & Folklore of some Irelands most unspoiled counties. Their unique mix of breathtaking coastal scenery, rugged hills and stone-age archaeology, make one of the most interesting walking areas in all of Europe. Transport to and from Bundoran and your qualified mountain guide are included in the price. You just need the right clothes and footwear, and a packed lunch. Combine your hill walking with some of the best surfing in the world and you have a great package.

We are offering a fully inclusive package of 5 nights B&B in Bundoran Surf Lodge,  5 fully guided hill walks with transport, and 5 surf lessons with all equipment included on the following dates in 2013:
August 18th – 23rd
September 1st – 6th

Price: €325pps dorm rooms. €350pps private rooms (based on 2-3 sharing).
Details: Arrive Sunday, depart Friday. Surfing at 10am each morning, hillwalking each afternoon at 2pm.
It is also possible to stay extra nights and do extra walking and surfing – just let us know and we can get you a price.
There is a walk every Saturday (the day after the end of the above package dates) that is open to all and the cost is €30pp including guide and transport. Booking essential.

Below is a selection of some of the most popular walks in the area:

1/ SLIEVE LEAGUE (Mountain of the Flagstones 601 Meters 1972ft)
The sea cliffs of Slieve League brood over the South Donegal Coast and are dramatic sight. The walk starts at Bunglass proceeds over “Eagles Nest” and on over “One Man’s Pass”(so named because of the narrow path to the summit). We return via the remains of St Hugh MacBricks Church along the pilgrims path pass the holy well and back to base. Distance 10Km time 4 – 6hours

2/BENBULBEN PLATEAU
Ben Bulben, the fearsome and famous landmark of Sligo immortalised by Ireland’s foremost poet William Butler Yates, with the lines “Under bare Ben Bulben’s  head”. The mountain presents a formidable prospect from the nearby lowlands with its stern vertically furrowed cliffs above steeply sloping grass. Surprisingly it is quite a moderate walk once the crest is reached and it offers fantastic views of the coastline and Innis Murray Island.
Length of Walk 6/km. Time 3- 4 hours. Degree of difficulty moderate

3/ THE SUMMIT OF TRUSKMORE AND TIEVEBAUN
These 2 peaks are the highest points in Counties Sligo and Leitrim and are quite close to each other. The summit of Truskmore (647meters) is reached by a road that services a radio mast, the mast was erected by a Norwegian company in 1962 and is over 100 meters high. Tievebaun is reached by following the boundary wall that divides Sligo and Leitrim. A slight diversion to the west reveals the wreck of a B17 World War 2 Bomber that crashed here in December 1943. Descent from the summit of Tievebaun is by way of an old mule track that was once used for bringing turf from the mountains to the valley below.
Length of walk 9Km, Time 4 – 5 hours, Degree of difficulty moderate.

4/ The Breesy Mountain Circuit
A fairly easy walk encompassing lakes, woodlands, and hills, also visiting a Megolithic Tomb and a Mass Rock. The walk begins at the Traveler’s Friend a well known Public House.  About 2 Kms on we pass a megalithic tomb dating back to over 4000 years. Several lakes are passed until Bressy Mountain is reached, though only 258 Meters in height some fantastic views are offered from the summit. The Blue Stack mountains in the North, cliffs of Magho and Lough Erne in the east, Ben Bulben and Knocknarea in the south and the vast expanse of Donegal Bay in West. Further on there is a Mass Rock where the locals said Mass in Penal Times, the walk then meanders through the Knader woodlands pass the Hydro Electric dam at Cloghore to terminate at the historical town of Ballyshannon.
Length of walk 10 Km, Time 4 – 5 hours Degree of difficulty Easy
