We have a video anlysis weekend on May 26th/27th with Bundoran Surf Academy. You can do 1 session for €40 or do a full weekend of video anlysis and coaching for €150 (€75 per day). If this date does not suit let us know and we may may be able to arrange other dates.

In the Surf Academy courses we focus on more intermediate surfing techniques such as effective paddling, wave knowledge and selection, take off and bottom turning, trimming and duck diving. The courses also focus on surfing etiquette..

The Surf Academy is ideal for people who have their own boards, but for those that don’t we have plenty of boards to choose from so just let us know what you need. It is also an opportunity to try our test drive boards. We don’t provide transport for the Surf Academy lessons so we will meet you at the beach at the agreed time. We can bring along boards and wetsuits (at no extra charge) if you need them and you can come to the surf school afterwards for hot showers and a cuppa.

Bundoran Surf Academy Saturday lesson
closer to the time depending on conditions).

You can bring along your own board or try out one of the boards in our test

A lesson costs €40pp with a maximum of 6 in a group. We can do other times
especially if you have a group of 4-6 people.

best beach on the morning and we can bring extra boards and wetsuits if you need
them.

You can use the changing facilities and showers in the surf school
afterwards.

Bundoran Surf Academy full day course

The full day course is suitable for anyone who would like to really have an
intensive day of coaching in and out of the water.

If you have one technique you would like to work on or maybe you need some
general coaching, then a full-on day might be the answer.

The format of the day is an intensive 2 hour surf lesson with your
instructor in the morning followed by a break for lunch. In the afternoon the
instructor will use video analysis so you can see your strenghts and weaknesses
in the playback session.

Price is €75pp with a maximum of 6 in a group. We can do other dates if you
have a group of 4-6 people.

Surf Report

Looks like a swell is due to hit this weekend. The west swell should hit on saturday but will start weak enough and with south west winds will be cross shore at Tullan. Nothing amazing but better than we have had recently and worth a paddle hopefully. Overnight on saturday the swell will fill in and should be big on sunday. The wind will pick up from the south west so most spots will be onshore but the swell will be big enough for Streedagh to break. The wind will get gusty so be careful. Looks like the flat spell is broken with swell all next week.

Which suit to choose for summer

Often in Ireland people say to us they only need one wetsuit that can do all year and they use their 5/4/3mm winter wetsuit all year for warmth. A winter suit generally has 3mm in the arms, 4mm in the legs, and 5mm in the chest. However it is not neccessary to wear a 5/3 all year in Ireland. If you dont surf in the deepest winter and only want one suit then a 4/3mm is probably better. These suits have 4mm neoprene in the chest, and 3mm in the arms and legs. Most people will find surfing a lot easier with a little less rubber. You are lighter and more flexible and your arms won’t get as tired as quickly, plus 4/3mm suits tend to be slightly cheaper. Lots of guys here use a 4/3 as their summer suit which will last from April to November. Another benefit of having a second suit is that your winter suit doesnt get as much wear and tear and is in a better condition once winter arrives.

3/2mm wetsuits are generally referred to as summer suits and are super flexible and feel amazing in summer when compared to 5/3mm winter suits. Generally these suits are a combination of 2mm neoprene in the arms and legs, and 3mm in the chest. They are a lot lighter and tend to be used from May/June until October. The 3/2mm tends to be cheaper as well so it suits surfers who only go in the summer months. Below we have a few of the 4/3mm and 3/2mm suits that have arrived.

The ASP may introduce pay-per-view system for the online broadcast of the ASP World Tour

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) is studying the possibility of introducing a pay-per-view system for the online broadcast of the ASP World Tour surfing stages.

The number of live stream enthusiasts has been growing steadily in the last years. Millions of surf fans invade the event’s official site in order to capture the stoke, from all corners of the world. Surfing has evolved thanks to the digital democracy.

Meanwhile, pro surfers are lobbying for more cash in prize money and sponsoring rights. Surf brands abandon iconic stages – New York, for example – in order to secure their yearly net profits. Which means that the broader audience they helped create is also going to kill their revenues.

“A pay-per-view webcast/broadcast model has been discussed in depth at the ASP Board level, and is an option for moving forward,” Dave Prodan, ASP International Media Director, tells ESPN.

“”There is obvious resistance to moving away from the free model towards a pay-per-view model in regards to the risk of reduction of fans,” Prodan continues. “However, if the pay-per-view model were to result in continued premium event locations and perhaps an enhancement upon the delivery of the current product, then one could feasibly estimate that the fan base would be happy to pay for the experience”.

While that is absolutely true, it’s really important to know who the audience is. SurferToday.com has been studying the profile of the average surfer and current figures suggest that a pay-per-view surf ticket will dramatically reduce the number of fans following their idols, as well as a drastic number of surf brand contacts with the market.

Of course, it will be different if prices charged are 40$ or 10$ per season. The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing webcast collected 10.4 million views. How much will it cost to watch a single event? One dollar or three dollars? The question remains for both cases: how will surf fans see it?

Lots of fun fishes in stock for spring and summer

With summer almost here the swells are going to get smaller and the focus of surfing moves from the reefs to the beaches. Often the beaches and smaller waves require shorter, wider, thicker boards, known as a fish. If you get a wider profile board, especially in the nose, you would be surprised how short you can go compared to your normal short board. These boards have been influenced by the retro boards of the 70′s/80′s with each shaper having his own take on the fish. Of course if you feel like cruising you could just go the longboard route, nothing more fun than getting on a 9 plus board and cruising. We have some awesome fishes in stock this year. We also have some test drive options if you are not sure what you want.

The Christian Bradley Vipers are the closest boards to normal shortboards and are best for good surfers looking for something for summer but still quite a performance board. CB designed the Viper after riding Simon Anderson’s famous 81 model thruster in January 09. Back in the 80′s, guys usually had only one board and it was used in all conditions up to 10ft! CB wanted something with the same feel and look. A perfect mix of old and new. Dimensions 6’0 x 20 x 2 1/2 and 6’0 x 20 x 2 5/8 available here

This year we have all got excited by the Hayden shapes. The Hypto Krypto is the most versatile shape in the Haydenshapes range, enabling it to be ridden in waves from 1ft to 8ft. It paddles like a dream due to the volume and flatter rocker. You ride the Hypto Krypto on the open face, drawing fast, flowing lines with all the speed it provides. Future Flex construction in 5’8, 5’10 and 6’0. Available from €565 here

The Aloha Bean boards are similar to the Haydens, with FutureFlex construction. The Bean is a hybrid design that you can ride 3-6 inches shorter than your regular short board. The 6’0 costs €540 and the 6’3 costs €550. Click here

Next board in the range is the 7S Fuse. High volume shortboards in 6’3 and 6’6 they are perfect for intermediate surfers looking for some extra paddling power. With prices from €375 they are hard to beat for value. Click here

The Tiki Prozac is a really fun epoxy fish. It has a very wide nose making it a really fun fast board. The Prozac is also suited to all levels of surfer as it comes in sizes from 5’8′ to 6’8. Available from €410 here

Also for those looking for Longboards we have a few options. Circle One have a great priced 9’2 at €520 available here
